Following the Second World War, the IG Farben Building became the headquarters of the US Military in Europe, and subsequently the US Army V Corps. The rotunda was repurposed for more mundane use, serving as a snack bar for officers and soldiers and undergoing appropriate renovations It was not until the 1980s, under the orders of Commanding General and later Secretary of State Colin Powell, that the room was restored to its original state, complete with Bauhaus-style seating. The foyer was also redesigned to include an open gallery that provided a view into the rotunda, which continued to function as a snack bar. The name "Eisenhower Rotunda" was bestowed by Powell in honor of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the former Commander in Chief and later President of the United States, who was the first general to reside in the IG Farben Building after the war. Additionally, the large congress room on the first floor was named after him, and a bust of the general was placed in the rotunda, which also served as a memorial until the Americans vacated the building.
